With the increasing popularity of Anime, Manga, and Movies like The Last Samurai, Japanese weapons are getting a lot more popular. Especially the swords. You see Katana's, Tanto's and Masumane popping up everywhere. The popularity makes them now a mass product, and everyone assumes you own one of those weapons because they are 'cool'. What I hate most about the hype are two things:
1) most of the weapons you see in the shops these days are poor quality. The balance is poor, the handles are to loosely attached, the edge has burrs and the wrapping comes of after a while.
2) you get a lot of people who think themselves experts on swords. Watching a movie, and owning a sword doesnt make you an expert. On the contrary. It makes you dangerous. Too many accidents have happened because a grown up fool who thought he knew something went swinging with a sword.
I hope that I can do a little bit about nr. 2 with this tutorial. Too often do I hear people speak about swords and use the wrong names to indicate parts. I put in everything I know, in English, and in Japanese.
As someone commented, how does knowing this make you a better swordsman? Well, by knowing what you are talking about, you are making a first step in getting to know the weapon. Its essential that you know every part of a sword before you can perfect its use. Sure, it doesnt make you a master swordsman, but you have to take that first step.
Hope this helps.
Correction! It isnt Tusba, but Tsuba...
More info, thanks to centaur101:
Kissaki - sword point Hassaki - Blade Saya - Scabbard Sageo - scabbard sash Menuki - small ornament found wrapped in handle Tsukamaki - handle wraping (usually japanese cotton) mekugi-ana - bamboo pins holding handle to blade
(thanks to a good friend of mine for making the image)
very nice. Great idea. I agree completely with you.
A couple of things though; 'colar', do you mean collar?
and tusba (if it is meant to be that) wouldn't be written like that in english. did you mean tsuba? 's' and 'b' can't go together like that. Proofreading can really save you.
Anyway, nice idea. I hope a few people learn from this.
Hm... I'm an aweful speller. Yup. There it is. I spelled collar wrong...
I thought I had Tusba spelled properly... But then again, my Japanese isnt that great... I'll have to look it op sometime...
I hope people learn from this too. It would keep people from embarrasing themselves.
congrats again on a really original idea. yeah, spell check won't pick up on the japanese words, so that's where you need to be really careful. Although, it would be kinda funny if people started using tusba. haha
I've been wanting to get into swords (heck, I need to have somewhere to practice with my -bow- more first lol!) so I likies this very much! ^^ And ya don't have to worry about ol' ishna going out and playing with a big sword that's gonna kill someone when I get one--I know I'm a stupid moron and want a wooden one first Lol!

Oh, I'm going to buy a bow too. And me smart. I'm taking a friend of mine who has been shooting with them for two years now to give me advise.
And if you buy a sword, go to a decent shop. It'll be a lot more expensive, but it'll be worth it. Even better yet, take someone with you that can advise you.
We both smart bowsmen! *has a friend who's been shooting with her father since she was...well....very tiny* Hehe ^^ I can -almost- cock her crossbow, but she's stronger than me *pouty*
If you wanna get into bows, get a compound first--you can hold it back longer
